Tonsils are lymphoid tissues that occupy the sides of the oral throat and adenoids sit behind the nose above the oral throat. These can become enlarged or swollen, or even infected and painful.
When conservative measures (such as antibiotics, steroids and gargles) fail, surgery may be indicated.
